A calligraphy pen with a chisel nib is the tool that makes lettering look like calligraphy rather than handwriting. The flat edge lays a wide stroke when you pull down and a thin one when you move sideways, and that automatic thick-and-thin โ governed by direction, not pressure โ is the entire look of broad-edge scripts.
Pigment ink is the reason to choose this over a dye pen: pigment is lightfast and water-resistant once dry, so finished lettering does not fade on a wall or run if it is framed behind glass with a little humidity. Hold the nib at a constant angle โ around 30 to 45 degrees for most scripts โ and let the edge do the work; the moment you start rotating the pen to chase a stroke, the letters lose their consistency. Cap it promptly, since a chisel tip dries unevenly and then lays a broken edge.
The 3 mm nib is the display width โ big letters, headings, titles and short pieces meant to be seen from across a room. The wider the nib, the more unforgiving it is of a wandering angle, so a 3 mm is where good habits learned on a finer nib pay off.
